Dashcam installation in Nigeria, cost and how it works

12 Sep 20265 min read

A dashcam dangling off the cigarette lighter by a loose cable is barely a dashcam. The install is half the value.

Done right, the camera is hidden, the wiring is invisible, and it powers on the moment you start the car. Here is exactly how a proper dashcam install works, and what it costs.

Hardwired or plug-in

There are two ways to power a dashcam, and they are not equal.

The plug-in route uses the cigarette-lighter socket. It is quick, but it leaves a cable trailing across the dashboard and ties up your only charging point.

The hardwired route connects the dashcam to the car's fuse box, so the cable disappears and the camera draws clean, switched power.

Hardwiring is also what unlocks parking mode on units that support it.

How a proper install works

A professional fit follows the same handful of steps.

The camera goes high on the windscreen, behind the mirror, where it sees the road without blocking your view.

The cable is tucked along the headlining and down the pillar trim so nothing dangles, then hardwired to the fuse box.

On a front and rear system, the rear camera is mounted and its cable run to the front unit.

Finally the installer sets the time, resolution and loop recording, fits the memory card, pairs the 4G connection for live streaming and GPS tracking, and tests that everything records.

You should not be able to see how a good dashcam is powered. That is the whole point of a clean install.

Why the clean install matters

It is not just about looks.

A tidy hardwired install means no wire to knock loose, no socket taken up, and on capable units, a parking mode that keeps recording bumps and break-ins while the car is off.

A messy plug-in install is the one that quietly stops working the day you actually need the footage.

What installation costs

The fitting itself is a modest fee. The bigger number is the device.

At Car Tracker Nigeria, a single-channel front camera is ₦150,000 fitted, and the two-channel front and rear is ₦250,000. Both are 4G, with live streaming and GPS map tracking on a paired screen.

Installation is one-time, then a ₦40,000 annual renewal covers 12 months of 4G data, the SaaS platform fee and the service charge. Across the wider market, bare devices run from about ₦60,000 to ₦300,000 and up, with fitting on top.

Given that the install is what makes the camera reliable, it is not the place to cut corners. The full device pricing is in our dashcam price guide.

DIY or professional

You can fit a simple plug-in unit yourself in minutes.

But a clean hardwired install, with hidden cables, a rear camera, and a working parking mode, is worth handing to someone who does it daily, so the wiring is safe and the footage dependable.

Frequently asked questions

How is a dashcam installed in Nigeria?

The camera is mounted high on the windscreen, the cable is routed out of sight along the trim, and it is ideally hardwired to the fuse box for clean, always-on power. The installer then sets it up and tests the recording.

Should I hardwire my dashcam?

Hardwiring gives a tidy install with no dangling cable and enables parking mode on units that support it. Plugging into the cigarette lighter works but leaves a visible wire and usually no parking protection.

How much does dashcam installation cost in Nigeria?

At Car Tracker Nigeria, single-channel front is ₦150,000 fitted and front and rear is ₦250,000, both 4G with live streaming and GPS map tracking. A ₦40,000 annual renewal then covers data, the platform and service. Bare devices on the wider market run about ₦60,000 to ₦300,000 plus fitting.

Can I install a dashcam myself?

A plug-in dashcam, yes. A clean hardwired install with hidden cables, a rear camera and working parking mode is best left to a professional so the wiring is safe and tidy.
