Why is my car tracker offline, and how to fix it

You open the app and the car says offline. Before your stomach drops, read this.

Nine times out of ten, an offline tracker is something ordinary and fixable, not a stolen car. Here is what causes it, how to clear each one, and the single case where offline really does mean act now.

Power loss, the usual culprit

A hardwired tracker runs off the car's battery. Cut that and it goes quiet.

The most common cause is innocent. A mechanic disconnected the battery during a service and the unit has not fully come back, or the car battery itself has gone flat. If your tracker dropped offline right after a workshop visit, that is almost always your answer.

Start the car, let it run, and give it a few minutes to report in. A unit with a healthy hidden, hardwired install and a backup battery rides through most of this without you noticing.

The SIM or subscription has lapsed

A tracker talks to you over a mobile SIM. Break that link and the app says offline even though the unit is fine.

Two things cause it.

Your annual service may have lapsed, so the data simply stopped.

Or the tracker sits on an unregistered SIM, the kind cheap installs use, which the NCC deactivates, along with any SIM left inactive for about 90 days.

Confirm your subscription is current first. If it is, and the unit still will not connect, the SIM is the suspect, and a SIM registered on your NIN is exactly what prevents this.

An unregistered SIM is a tracker quietly waiting to fail. The day it does is rarely a convenient one.

Weak GPS signal

Sometimes the car is fine and the sky is the problem.

Underground car parks, tight basements, heavy rain and dense high-rise blocks can all weaken the signal for a while, so the app shows a stale position or a brief offline. It usually clears the moment the car is back under open sky.

If offline only happens in one spot, like your office basement, and clears when you drive out, that is all it is.

The app just needs a refresh

Not every offline is the tracker. Sometimes it is the phone.

Log out, update the app to the latest version, and log back in. That simple reset clears a surprising number of false offline readings by syncing the app cleanly with the server.

When offline is a real warning

Here is the one case to take seriously.

If the tracker drops offline suddenly while the car is being driven, or right after it goes missing, do not assume it is a flat battery. It can be a thief cutting the power or running a jammer to go dark.
