Knowing which cars they hunt, and why, tells you most of what you need to protect yours.

Here are the models most at risk, the reasons they are chosen, and where they tend to end up.

The cars thieves go for first

Toyota leads, and it is not close.

The Corolla and Camry disappear constantly, for one plain reason: there are so many of them that a buyer is always waiting and a stolen one blends straight into traffic.

Behind them sit the workhorses and the status cars.

The Hilux. The Prado and Land Cruiser. The Lexus RX and GX. The Honda Accord half the country still calls by its old street names.

Why these models and not others

Three things put a car on this list.

Resale is the first. A common model sells fast and quietly, often across a state line before the owner has finished filing the report.

Parts are the second. A stripped Hilux or Corolla is worth real money in panels, engines and gearboxes, and that demand never cools.

Ease is the third. Older keyless and basic-immobiliser cars are quick to take for anyone who knows them.

Where cars actually get taken

Theft clusters where cars and crowds mix.

Lagos leads, as the traffic and sheer number of vehicles would suggest. Cars go from car parks, filling stations and roadside spots, and from slow traffic where a driver is boxed in with nowhere to move.

Abuja and Port Harcourt run their own versions, often weighted toward carjacking at estate gates, junctions and quiet roads after dark.

The thread through all of it is opportunity. A car left running at a shop, a gate that opens slowly, a junction where you have to stop. Thieves read those moments better than most drivers do.

How they move once stolen

A stolen car does not sit still.

Within hours the plates are swapped and the car is moving, toward a buyer in another state, toward a border, or into a yard to be broken for parts. The chassis number is the one mark a thief cannot easily erase, which is why it matters so much in recovery.
