Verify online at the FRSC portal
The official route is the FRSC vehicle portal.
Go to nvis.frsc.gov.ng, open the verify plate number page, type in the plate and submit.
If the plate is real, the registered vehicle's details come back.
If nothing comes up, treat that as a red flag.

Send an SMS in the form VerifyPlateNo ABC123DE, swapping in the real plate, to the shortcode 33324.
You get back the vehicle's details for that plate.

Reading the result
The check answers one question: does this plate belong to this car.
If the make, model and colour that come back match the car in front of you, the plate is genuine.
If the check returns nothing, or shows a completely different vehicle, the plate is likely fake or cloned.
Either way, do not stop at the plate. Cross-check the chassis number (VIN) and engine number too, since those are far harder to fake than a printed plate.
